Miami Ink Recap–“No Regrets”

Will Ami (pictured above) and Chris finally work things out? Are Yoji’s music dreams closer to become a reality? And what’s with that guy who wants the fat girl pinup tattoo? All that and more on the season premiere of Miami Ink…
Chris has been giving Ami the silent treatment, and Ami gives Chris grief when he shows up late for work. The two agree to talk later to figure out where their partnership is headed. When they finally sit down together at the bar, they discuss their differences. “We’re partners, we’re not each other’s boss,” says Chris, who suggests that he spend more time at the club and Ami spend more time at the shop, and Ami agreed. Wow, and we were hoping for some fireworks, maybe a little fisticuffs. We’re glad you two worked it out–for now, at least…
Stan, a science technician, wants Chris to give him a fat girl pinup tattoo. “I’m just a guy that’s attracted to fat women,” explains Stan, who just happens to be married to a woman of a certain size. Stan is a Fat Admirer (FA for short) who is active in online support groups, which is where he met Deidra, a popular plus-size model and market research consultant, who is NOT his wife. Deidra comes in to the shop to meet Stan and get a fat girl pinup tattoo of her own. Stan’s wife didn’t come in, but Deidra’s husband came by for support (which we think means he came along to make sure this Stan guy didn’t try to hit on his woman). “Guys like Stan have more courage than other guys in this world,” says Deidra. “It’s not easy for an average-sized guy to come out and say, you know what? I really like fat women.” Stan and Deidra are both thrilled with their finished tattoos. “It’s gonna send a message to the world that I’m not ashamed of my body,” Deidra explains.
Simone, a massage therapist, wants Garver to tattoo a peacock on her back with the tattoo curling around her ribs. The peacock symbolizes the Yoruba goddess Oshun, a kind and benevolent spirit who rules over love and watches over children. “The tattoo will remind me of strength, endurance, and putting my children first,” says Simone. “My love and devotion for them was my motivation to do what I had to do to take care of them.” Simone is a single mom who got divorced when she was five weeks pregnant. Garver takes his time and really gets into the shading of the features. It was a long and painful process, but Simone didn’t complain at all and was grateful Garver paid such close attention to the details.
Ashley, a medical student, hires Ami to tattoo a praying angel on her shoulder. “It symbolizes having a guardian angel looking out for me in times of trouble,” she says. “To have this will help me get through many more difficult situations.” Ashley switched from psychiatry to medicine after she did a stint in the emergency room and helped save someone’s life. Ami reveals that he was constantly in the hospital as a kid, getting stitches for various injuries. We’re not surprised, Ami–we can believe you were the inspiration for whoever thought of putting leashes on little kids to keep them from getting away. (Just kidding, Ami! You know we love you…)
Yoji meets up with his music partner, Bob Strakelee, who finally moved to Miami so they can concentrate on launching their band, Big Deal, in the Miami music scene. Problem is, Miami’s not a big rock scene and they don’t really have a fan base, so they decide to record a demo for their song, “Breakaway”. They jam on the beach for a bit, and later Yoji talks to Ami, who has a friend at a college radio station and offers to hook them up with some exposure. Yohji and Bob book some studio time and realize that they have a lot more work to do on the song and not a lot of time. They crank it out, and the song’s finally ready to air. At the radio station, they get great feedback and callers who love it, and one caller who didn’t. “I’m really proud of them,” says Ami. We’ll see if Big Deal will live up to their name…
Maggie, a student, wants Nunez to tattoo a blue heron taking flight. Her mother had cancer, and a blue heron flew by her window every day when she was in the hospital. “That was the thing that kept her going,” Maggie explains. Nunez reworks the design, believing that it would work better on her hip than on her side. Maggie agrees and goes with his vision. “My mom would be proud that I got something tasteful and elegant,” she says.
Jorge, a production assistant, wants a tattoo of a kneeling hula girl on his upper arm. He took a trip to Bali two years ago, where he met a beautiful girl, Jennifer, and fell in love. Jorge’s boat broke down at the end of the trip and never saw her again—he didn’t get her phone number. “She’s still in my mind and in my memories,” says Jorge. Dude, how the hell did you not get the girl’s phone number?!? We know your friends still give you crap about that. The whole story is romantic and all, and we hate to burst your bubble, but if Jennifer was so into you, why didn’t she just give you her number? Just a thought…
Mark, an occupational therapist, wants Ami to tattoo a Rassi fish. “It will do anything for its colony, it’s a very selfish fish. The fish changes sex to meet the colony’s needs.” Why, you ask, is this significant to Mark? He used to be a woman, baby! You read that right–In 2003, he had surgery to remove his breasts and sexual organs. Next step? Create a penis. (Yeeouch!). “You have to be what your heart and your mind tells you,” Mark explains. Mark also said that the testosterone he takes has improved his sense of direction, which Ami loved to hear. “It all makes sense now why every girl I’ve ever dated always gets lost,” Ami laughs.
